In May 2007 Chris’s farther contacted The Sports Team at Worcester City Council asking for any help and support that could be offered towards the spiralling costs incurred by his sons’ talent in the sport of Hockey. Consequently, Mr Kendall was put in contact with Sport Worcester who subsequently submitted a membership form and application form.

14 year old Chris who plays left wing / inside left at under 15’s level for Worcester Hockey Club www.worcesterhockey.co.uk and on selection for Worcestershire County www.worcsha.co.uk and the Midlands Hockey Club www.mrha.co.uk applied for funds to assist him with travel and equipment expenses after being selected by the Midlands for the 2007 Hockey Festival held in Eindhoven on 24 th May. Subsequently, Chris was awarded £300.

Chris is acknowledged by his coaches (Peter Gibbins – Worcester Hockey Club, Tim Drew - Worcester County / Midlands Hockey Club) as one of the City’s most gifted and talented players.

To date Chris, as part of the Midlands team has been a Nation Tournament Winner for U13’s (May 2006) and U14’s (May2007) and is already an established player for the U15’s and regularly picked to represent the City in the Mens Team.

Andy Price (Chairperson of Sports Worcester) commented “Sport Worcester was established many years ago to retain the City’s gifted and talented athletes who may otherwise drop out of sport due to financing there talent. It was a pleasure to help and support Chris, who is a name to look out both now and in the future”.

Rachel Ellwood

In March 2007 the Sport Worcester Committee received a Grant Awards Application from Rachel to assist her with travel expenses for the then forth coming World Championships to be held in Hungary . The committee who have tracked Rachel’s progress closely since she became a member decided to award her with £150 which would assist her with various travel expenses.

 

Rachel is a 3 rd Dan Black belt in Karate and fights in the +65kg weight and fights for England ’s Wada-Ryu Sports Karate Association (EWSKA).

Rachel put the grant to good use and won Silver Individual Kumite, Silver Team Kata and Bronze Team Kumite at the 2007 World Championships. The added accolades take Rachel’s tally of World Championship Medals to 17 (7 gold, 5 silver and 5 bronze)

Rachel, who will be off on her travels again in October to take part in the World Traditional Karate Association (WTKA) Championships held in Italy said “Sport Worcester has not only assisted me this year, but has continued to support me for a number of years. Without their financial support and easy of obtaining grants I don’t think I would have achieved what I have today”

Johnny Tye

Early in 2007 a Grant Award Application was received by Johnny Tye a 14 year old member or Worcester Canoe Club. His request was for funds to help purchase a kayak canoe that would be sufficient for him to use when representing the club and the region. The committee realised Johnny would benefit it terms of his own Sports Development from receiving a grant, and decided to award Johnny £250.

 

To date Johnny has won 9 gold medals and 2 silver medals in Under 14’s Flat Water Racing, 2 gold, 1 silver in 500m K1 sprint, 3 gold’s in 1,000m K1, K2 & K4 sprint, 2 gold in 2.5k K2 sprint and 1 silver in a marathon.

Since Johnny received his grant to which he purchased a new racing canoe he has added to his medal hall with a further two gold’s in the 1,000m sprint (K1 & K2) at the National Flat Water Championships (Under 14’s category).

Due to Johnny’s recent success and obvious elite performances he has being contacted to represent the country in the Under 16’s Flat Water World Championships which will take place on 29 th September in France .

 

Johnny, who is not 15 until January 16 th said “The grant application which I submitted to Sport Worcester has undoubtedly assisted me and my development as a sports person. I would sincerely like to thank Sport Worcester for the quick decision and their generosity which has now enabled me to be selected to represent the country and the World Championships in September”.

 

Andy Price (Chairperson of Sports Worcester) added “Johnny is a shining example as to why we fund individuals and clubs – so that they can improve and develop”.
